"Rescue Angel" by Dick Levesque Hugging the cliffs and rock shoreline as the crew searches for a victim they've been called to rescue, calling the HH65 Dolphin a welcome sight is a vast understatement. It's like watching a miracle unfold before your eyes. Survivors have called the rescue swimmer, or Aviation Survival Technician, that is lowered to the side of a cliff or who jumps into the chilly water, an angel. The whirling blades, the hurricane force winds, the sea battering every movement, the precision team on-board the helo works in tandem to execute the rescue...whether it's a stranded hiker, a swimmer caught in a rip current, or an injured fisherman aboard a pitching fishing vessel where the rescue basket and hoist cable could easily be caught in the boat's mast and rigging. "Rescue Angel" is a tribute to all those crews who have come to the rescue...some of whom have lost their own lives in the process. The HH65 is primarily a short range recovery aircraft. At this writing there are approximately 102 in the Coast Guard and located in at least 17 cities on the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, and the Great Lakes. Normally deployed from shore, it can also be deployed from medium and high endurance cutters as well as the Polar Icebreakers. The main mission of the HH65 is: search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties (including drug interdiction), marine environmental protection including pollution control, and military readiness. A relatively new job is to patrol the air defense identification zone around Washington, DC. Seven new HH-65Cs were acquired for this mission.
